Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychological therapy?

Most people face emotional or psychological difficulties at some point in their lives.  Many people value the opportunity to explore these difficulties with a trained and trusted professional, in order to move forwards.

Psychological therapy is the process of understanding and working on emotional or psychological difficulties through the medium of a collaborative, confidential and supportive relationship.

Clinical Psychologists undergo extensive, Doctoral level training to deliver evidence-based psychological therapy.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

There are a confusing array of options for accessing psychological therapy.

The selection process for Clinical Psychology training is vigorous.  Prospective Clinical Psychologists require an Undergraduate degree in Psychology and relevant experience working in research or healthcare settings in order to be accepted onto a training programme.  The programme is Doctoral level and takes three years to complete.  It is a broad curriculum of study where trainees learn both the skills necessary to work with people presenting with a wide variety of difficulties in addition to the ability to undertake and understand research. As such the training path for most Clinical Psychologists from commencing their Undergraduate programme to completion of the Doctorate will take around 10 years. 'Clinical Psychologist' is a legally protected title, giving assurance that only those who have undertaken this in-depth training can describe themselves as such.

A professional trained in this way will be able to draw on both their experience and the evidence base when deciding together with you on the most helpful way of working together.
